Ink Review: J. Herbin 1670 Emerald of Chivor

J. Herbin 1670 Emerald of Chivor

First, I want to say a huge thanks to JetPens, Goulet Pens and Rhodia Drive for all coming through for me and getting me this much-coveted ink. They are all responsible for allowing me to review this product and give some goodies away. Now, on the the review and giveaway details!

J. Herbin 1670 Emerald of Chivor

I cannot tell you how long I’ve been waiting to ink this ink in my hands and, by now, you and I have seen dozens of other reviews of this ink. So, there’s probably not a lot I could say that hasn’t already been said. But bear with me…

Maybe I could tell you that before the name was settled upon, Emerald of Chivor was called “Emeraude des Ardes v.2”? This tidbit of information came from the sample bottle that Rhodia sent to me. Pretty cool, huh?

Before I shook up the inks, you can see the gold flecks floating at the bottom. Such a beautiful sea blue-green!

Sadly, when I photographed my full writing page, you don’t see much of the sparkle. The flash flattens out all the color. At the same time, in my TWSBI 580 in green with a fine nib, not much of the sparkle showed in the writing anyway. These types of twinkly inks definitely benefit from a stub, broad or italic nib in order to show them in their full glory.

However, the color is amazing! With or without the sparkles.

J. Herbin 1670 Emerald of Chivor ink comparison

When compared with my ever-growing collection of teal blue inks, there is a vibrancy to the Emerald of Chivor that is lacking in the other contenders in this color category. Don’t get me wrong, I think they are all beautiful colors. The Emerald of Chivor is definitely more bluish than Ku-Jaku or Yama Dori. The Callifolio Olifants is a tad more blue than the Chivor. So if you’re looking for ink in a similar color family but sparkle-free, any of these others are good options with Callifolio Olifants and Noodler’s Air Corps Blue Black being the most wallet friendly.

I’ve left the EoC in my 580 for over a week, gave it a little twirl to mix in the gold fleck and started writing with no issues. I’ve heard there’s some challenges cleaning it out but so far I’m not having any clogging issues so I am really happy with this ink.

So what can I do to wow you with the new Emerald of Chivor?  I can giveaway a whole bottle of Emerald of Chivor (thanks to JetPens for this bottle!) and the runner-up will get the super, rare sample bottle of Emerald of Chivor BEFORE the name was settled upon (thanks to Rhodia for this!). While to color is identical, its a cool little bit of ink history.

Leave a comment below and tell me what sparkly color you think J. Herbin should do next to be entered to win. I’ll draw two winners: the first will get a full bottle of J. Herbin 1670 Emerald of Chivor and the second will get the preliminary sample bottle.

  1. I really feel like what’s missing out of my ink box and my pens is orange. There are two I like ok. One by Noodlers one by J. Herbin. I really feel like a 1670 batch would kill it like a battle or firefight of the ships at sea batch of ink. Something along those lines, or sailing into the sunset never to be heard of again?? Haha.. Who knows good luck deciding J. Herbin! Wish I could work there seeiously!

  2. I would like to see the names of gems used as a theme for the inks. A rich deep purple ink could be named Amethyst of Artigas.

  3. I think an orange that is a nice blend of their yellow and red, with the sheen of quinacridone. Love an autumnal hue.

  4. Some of the previous comments are great color ideas. I think a Navy with gold flakes in it would be great. For an ink without flakes, a good solid red. So many of them are oddly shaded. I am thinking of a really solid strong red.

  5. What a gorgeous ink. I MUST have it!!!! As for the next one, well to keep in line with the gemstone theme…I’d suggest ruby red or “rouge rubis”.

  6. Even though I haven’t had a lot of experience with different colors of inks, looking at the previous releases, I think that a nice deep violet color would be a very awesome color.

  7. A beautiful dark golden, legible yellow/orange would be great with sparkles. I was going to say it’d be like desert sand, but then I realized that came straight from Diamine. I would still love to see J. Herbin’s version though! Thanks for the chance to win!

  8. I would love to see a sparkly purple or a deep sepia brown with gold flecks … or just about any other color that J.Herbin would like to sparklify – they always do a beautiful job of it! 🙂

  9. Purple would be lovely. I was switching inks from stormy grey to a plain purple ink, and even after flushing the first few words I wrote were purple with gold flecks- wished it stayed like that!

  10. Sepia with golden or copper flecks would be gorgeous, but as a previous commenter stated, any color J.Herbin selects will be amazing!

  11. Since I’m a pretty pretty prices at heart, I’d love a purple with some sort of sheen. <3 Maybe some pink in there? I'd snap that up in a heartbeat!

  12. I wonder if they can make something besides gold or silver flakes? A nice blue ink with red or green sparkles would be interesting.

  13. I’m loving the sparkly combined with deep, cool colors. A dark blueish slate would be gorgeous with deep silver sparkles. I hope I win! This blog inspired me to buy my first fountain pen and when it arrives, I’ll need something to write with!

  14. Tough to say! But I think my vote would be for a purple, I think—one that leans to the deep and rich side, with the similar depth and variety of color to Emerald of Chivor.

  15. I am so in love with this ink. I have it in 2 pens. I am not a fan of teal or greens (except olive) but this has bowled me over. Someone said orange next and then another said brownish orange. I think a brown orange with sparkle could be stunning. More brownish would make it looks super vintage.
