  1. Nothing at all. My employer buys the worst dross possible when it comes to office supplies. I have seen one of the directors throw his stapler in the bin in a fit of rage because it wouldn’t work. Recycled paper that james up the printers, notebooks with uselessly thin paper, see through envelopes which you have to lick to seal and tastes absolutely foul, sellotape that doesn’t stick, rip-off Post-It notes. I now take all my own stationery in. Quality products because I’m worth it!

  2. I used to do the reverse. When the office supplies became scarce due to budget issues, I used to buy things like good ballpoints in quantity and slip them into the storage cabinet. I would also hand them out to my buddies. Having a lousy pen or no pen at all just doesn’t work at work!

  3. Ah, the golden age of stealing office supplies is over, I fear. We too have the worst stuff – bad pens, tiny Post-It Notes, lousy paper. And now we’ve all been issued with recyclable batteries, so there aren’t even batteries to pinch. Sometimes, I find where they’ve hidden the padded envelopes and take one or two, but then they get moved or disappear or someone else takes them all.

  4. I bring home the Avery mailing labels once we’ve removed some labels from the page. We don’t re-use them because they gum up the printer. I make envelopes from old maps, and the labels are very helpful.

  5. My favourite item to liberate from the office store cupboard is binder clips. So useful for all kinds of things, not just holding a few sheets of paper together.

    Not the Post-It(tm) nots – because they are always off-brand ones which don’t work properly!

  6. Notecards and envelopes are definitely my choice for “liberated office supplies.” This is especially true when I only need one or two envelopes of a certain size and do not want to buy a full box.

  7. My employer has such amazing taste in office supplies, that I try to liberate them all. Only joking.
    I’m a self-employed music teacher, so I don’t have any opportunity to “liberate office supplies”, since everything already belongs to me.

  8. Maybe post-its for once in a while, but I usually like a better level of supplies than work buys, so its more often I bring it in as opposed to take it home 🙂

  9. I’m more prone to leaving things at work rather than taking them. But, I do squirrel away a lot of pens that I stick in my hair and forget about. Love this mug!

  10. Confession of a Designer:
    I have never EVER purchased a single Pilot Fineliner or Sharpie in my life… but I have tin cans (my upcycled pencil cup) filled with them!

    I can’t say I have earned nothing working in the design industry for 10 years! LOL.

    To my defend, I should say that I often reuse bubble mailers, large craft paper envelop (and even the stamps if I am lucky) from the office. So things balanced out nicely.

  11. Red rope file folders which are a great, affordable alternative to a briefcase when you just need to carry you’re in-box or mail back and forth.

  12. I always take post it notes when I’m actually thinking about taking something. But I have the worst habit of putting pens behind my ear so I bring one home every night pretty much.

  13. I usually end up with some page flags and Post-Its at home…on the other hand I tend to leave my own pens and plastic page holders at work, so I guess it evens out!

  14. I tend to be marking up an article with an office pen and highlighter and they end up just staying clipped to the page when it comes home with me…oops (;
