Midori Traveler’s Notebook: Star Edition

Aboard The Star Ferry

Last year, I had the opportunity to travel to Hong Kong for work and my absolute favorite thing to do was to take a trip across the harbor after work on the Star Ferry. I didn’t have a lot of free time so a quick jaunt gave me a scenic view of Hong Kong for the low, low price of ($2.50HK during the week and $3.50HK on the weekends which is about $0.35-.50US) so when I heard about the special Midori Traveler’s Notebook: Star Ferry Edition, I had to order one.

I have always been curious about comparing the Midori notebook to its more reasonably -priced cousin, the Pelle so I guess this is my chance.

The set includes a passport-sized Traveler’s Notebook in camel  leather that has been embossed with special branding indicating that it is the “Star Edition”, a special refill that features a Star Ferry route map and a brief history. There is also a certificate for a free ride on the ferry, should you find yourself in HK and out of pocket change.

The notebook kit costs $54 but if you already own a passport-sized Midori notebook, the special Star Ferry insert is $11US. There is currently a delay in Star Edition notebooks coming into the US, postponed until June, but you can pre-order them and have them shipped when they are available.

Additional items are available in the Star Edition line including stickers, metal charms, clips a rubber stamp, printed masking tape and a Midori Bullet Pencil in bright green with Star Ferry branding.

When my notebook arrives, I’ll do a follow-up.

  1. I sure wish I had one of them jobs where you get sent to cool places like Hong Kong. I get sent to the likes of Fishkill, Maryland, where, if you are lucky or diligent, you can get yourself a BIC Cristol, or maybe even a Pilot G-2, at the nearest Wal-Mart. 🙂

  2. I wish you had written this a couple of weeks ago. My son just returned from Hong Kong. He lives in Tokyo and when he has time off from work he travels around Southeast Asia. He brings such wonderful gifts to us at Christmas, Japanese stationery items and snacks are my favorites. The green tea Kit Kat bars are addictive. I’ve visited him twice in the twelve years he has lived there and I wish I could go more frequently.

    1. You should definitely visit Hong Kong if you ever get a chance. I’m sorry I didn’t mention this sooner but I just recently found that Resor would be carrying the notebooks in the US. Mentioning the special edition earlier would have been cruel as it would have been difficult to get any outside if Hong Kong.

  3. I live in the UK and mine arrived at the beginning of the month – they said mid-March but I guess it was delayed here too. Anyway: it’s beautiful. You won’t regret buying it. I got mine from the Journal Shop.

I’ve stuck a Field Notes in it even though it’s a little too tall so it sticks out at the top and bottom a little – I think it looks all right like that personally but it might annoy some people. I don’t know if you’re near a Muji, but their passport notebooks fit in it perfectly and are much cheaper than Midori refills. But the paper quality in the Midori refills is much better for FP users.

Not to digress or anything, but I’ve been looking for a cheaper source of refills for my larger traveler’s notebook and, annoyingly, I’ve had to come to the conclusion that the Midori ones are actually worth the price. I haven’t found anything else with such good quality paper.
