The Well-Appointed Desk

After several weeks of experimenting, I have to say that Rdio is the best desk accessory. Pronounced “ar-dee-oh”, this streaming service is sleek and efficient. It syncs with your iTunes and adds all the songs from your library to your collection on Rdio. It can then make recommendations based on the artists you like. You can also listen to what your friends and co-workers like (— although sometimes, its better not to know that the burly guy in the next cube is jamming out to Britney Spears).

If you are like me and work on multiple machines, Rdio makes it easy to bounce from work to home to laptop to iPhone and have all your music in one place. Build playlists or just have Rdio pick a random assortment.

Get a 7-day free trial, then pay either $4.95 a month for the online only option or $9.95 for online and mobile which lets you set-up playlists on your iPhone, Windows Phone 7, Android or Blackberry. There is a desktop app that runs via Adobe Air for Mac or PC.

Another workspace styled by former Blueprint Art Director Shane Powers. Lots of little pops of color in this space — like the red table legs, aqua side chair, sky blue bookshelf interior and acid yellow lamp. The wood, white and neutrals keep this from feeling too chaotic.

Yummygum transformed a dark, bleak space filled with drab MDF and black spaghetti into a streamlined temple to design efficiency. They designed their own desk, complete with logo word balloon cut-out on the surface for cable maintenance and a slot to hold a laptop perfectly. Note their use of the Bluelounge Cable Box too.

Following on the heels on Frank Chimero’s insight about his digital landscape, I read the January 2011 issue of MacWorld which included the Which Mac is Right for You article where each editor took on one of the six available models of Mac and waxed poetic.

So, how much power do you really need to get your job done? Are you writer? A multimedia guru? What is more valuable to you: portability, price or power?

(Yes, I realize there are many other computer brands on the market but as I have never used anything than a Mac, it would be unjust for me to even weigh in on those discussions.)
