Turn any plastic bottle into a pencil shavings catcher. This would be a perfect office solution. Take that empty Mr. Pibb bottle from this morning and use it to catch about a year’s worth of pencil shavings. The price is a bit steep at $20 for one but its such a clever solution. It looks like the blade removes with a screwdriver so you may be able to replace or upgrade the blade.
I posted recently about the DIY custom coffee mug from A Beautiful Mess and I got a lot of feedback from readers that using a Sharpie on a mug would not work well. So I went on a hunt for a better solution to customizing your coffee mug. I knew there had to be another option and there is: its the Pebeo Porcelaine 150 pen.
The pen is available in nine different colors and in either a broad or fine tip for about $5 per pen. Draw on your mug and then let the ink dry. Then pop the item in a 300℉ oven for 30 minutes and voila! The artwork or writing is now permanent and dishwasher safe though they recommend keeping the artwork to the outside of your mug and not where your food or mouth might come into contact with it.
Richard’s Pens created a fabulous document explaining and diagramming the differences between a regular fountain pen nib versus a stub or italic nib. If you’ve been listening to the Pen Addict podcast or frequents FPGeeks, this little document will make you feel wiser and better informed about the uses and differences of these nibs.

The big news this week in the world of notebooks is the new limited edition Mickey Mouse Moleskines. The notebooks are available in the pocket and large size. Each cover is debossed with classic drawings of the famous mouse. Inside, the end papers are filled with sketches and each notebook includes an instructive drawing guide so that you, too, can draw Mickey Mouse.
Even though the Moleskine paper isn’t great for fountain pens, the notebooks are well-built and classic and how can you not love classic Mickey? (FYI: Walt Disney started his mouse empire just a few blocks from where I work now. I can even walk past the building where it all started!)
These Moleskines are going to be popular and sell out fast so if you are interested, you might want to order one ASAP.
Our friends Down Under at Notemaker are currently carrying both the large notebook is plain and lined ($39.95 AU) and the pocket notebook in plain paper and lined ($29.95 AU). Remember, Well-Appointed Desk readers receive a 10% on purchases at Notemaker by entering the code “WELLAPPDESK12” at checkout. The Mickey Moleskines can also be purchased directly from Moleskine ($18.95 and $24 for pocket and large respectively) or from Jenni Bick (on sale for $17.06 and $21.60 for pocket and large respectively).
Kansas City is in the middle of an epic snow dump today. Everything is grey and blizzard-y so I thought some happy photos would be just the thing to cheer up we snowbound.
Martha Stewart Living included instructions on how to build a plywood-and-plumbing-pipe desk in their January 2013 issue. This desk includes a small raised shelf across the back of the desk which is a lovely added feature. There are even downloadable schematic instructions to help you with your new project.
If you like this project, check out the other DIY pipe desk I found earlier this month.
