Swirling with the Kaweco Sport Marble Ocean

The latest release from Kaweco has been a source of fascination and, for some, disappointment. The Kaweco Sport Marble Ocean with EF Nib ($37) features a marbled plastic barrel that features teal blues, greens and clear areas. Because the material is subject to unexpected variations, purchasing one of these pens can be a bit of like blind box roulette. Will the model I get be full of swirly colors or be more solid?

So, when my Marble Ocean arrived, I had to decide if I wanted to open the box with the anticipation “is it going to be the prettiest one?” or more “the world wants me to have THIS one”? I like to think if moment slike this more like a fortune cookie than a Labubu blind box. What I get is what I was meant to get.

So… here’s my moment of truth:

The model I received has a few spots where the material is almost clear but the swirls of greens and blues are well-mixed and beautiful.

If you’re considering purchasing one and worried that you won’t like the color swirl, I recommend purchasing a model in person from a local shop or at a pen show so that you can see what you’re getting.

Side Note:

I am not doing a full review of the Kaweco Sport fountain pen in this because I have reviewed and written about Kaweco Sport Fountain Pens so many times in the past that I will just be repeating myself. Kaweco remains a good quality pen for the price with good nib options. It’s one of the pens I most frequently recommend for new fountain pen buyers as there’s something less intimidating about this petite, little plastic gem.

A Little Kaweco History*

If you are not familiar with the Kaweco Sport fountain pen, it’s been around in many iterations for decades. In the last 20 years of so, the most common models are simple solid plastic designed to accept a cartridge or a mini converter. Kaweco has also offered the Sport in various metals like aluminum, brass, steel and more. Since then, they’ve re-released the more “original” filling mechanism with the Piston Filler model.
